Development
The Steyr 680 M is a (4 × 4) cargo truck designed to carry a maximum of 2,500 kg of cargo across country, or 4,500 kg on roads. The Steyr 680 M3 is a (6 × 6) cargo truck designed to carry a maximum of 3,500 kg of cargo across country, or 5,500 kg on roads and is a direct development of the Steyr 680 M, sharing a number of common components including cab and cargo body.In 1972 Steyr built a production facility in Greece for the manufacture of the 680 M (as the 680 MH) and 680 M3 (as the 680 MH) for the Hellenic armed forces, with the bulk of production occurring between 1975 and 1980. Production concluded in 1985, by which time the Greek government had taken ownership of the former Steyr Hellas SA facility. Vehicles produced by Steyr Hellas SA included up to 55 per cent local content.As of early 2003 an estimated 8,500 Steyr 680 vehicles remained in service with Hellenic armed forces with the manufacture and supply all spare parts for these being undertaken by the Hellenic Vehicle Industry SA (Elliniki Viomikhania Okhimaton - ELBO). In a statement dated May 2002 the then minister of national defence A Tsohatzopoulos spoke of the award of a contract for the refurbishment of 581 early 680 MH-680 MH3 trucks. Description
The forward control all-steel cab seats two and is fixed, being non-tiltable. An observation hatch, heater and fresh air ventilator are standard equipment. Cargo variants are the norm, these being provided with a tarpaulin cover over removable bows, a drop tailgate and collapsible troop seats for up to 20 men along the centreline. The load area measures 4.06 × 2.2 m (L × W).A 4,500 kg capacity winch with 90 m of 13 mm cable is standard on the 680 M and was fitted to the majority of 680 M3s. Some of the 680 M3 vehicles have a self-loading hydraulic crane mounted behind the cab and some of the Swiss Army 680 M vehicles have a shortened load area and a hydraulic crane mounted on the rear of the chassis.Dump truck (680 M3 only) and fuel/water tanker variants have been produced, and both models can mount a variety of shelter or box-type bodies.
